Implant Therapy for the Edentulous Patient: A review of the latest workflow and treatment options

Course Overview

Implant therapy in the edentulous, or soon-to-be edentulous patient is an expanding segment of the clinical practice. Thanks to advancements in techniques and technologies, dental professionals are now able to predictably increase function, form and aesthetics for this patient population. The purpose of this course is to provide a comprehensive overview of the evolving treatment options and the planning concepts that aid in successful full arch treatment. Specific challenges with the edentulous population, as well as clinical tips and pitfalls will be discussed.

Learning Objectives

At the completion of this course, participants will be able to understand:

  • Various edentulous treatment options, including implant-assisted and implant-supported restorations
  • How to identify the best treatment option based on individual patient needs and expectations
  • The importance of diagnosis, communication and treatment planning
  • The benefits of new edentulous treatment options, including patient-specific friction-retained prostheses and screw-retained fixed hybrids on a minimum of four implants
  • How to simplify and increase the predictability of fixed and removable cases

Bridget Marron completed her Master Dental Technician (MDT) studies at NYU and graduated from Mt. Ida Junior College with an Associate’s Degree in Dental Assisting. Bridget has almost 20 years of experience as a chairside dental auxiliary. She was a Certified Dental Auxiliary (CDA) and was also certified in Radiology. While working at the Boston University Dental School, Ms. Marron was trained as an Expanded Functions Dental Auxiliary (EFDA). While at the dental school, she also taught a dental materials course to the dental assisting students.

The Art of Furcation Navigation with Ultrasonic Instrumentation

Course Overview

This course examines the need for proper foundational skills in ultrasonic technique with both magnetostrictive and piezo technology. A review of proper angulation and adaptation will be discussed, as well as features of both technologies to achieve better clinical outcomes. This course also addresses understanding the working mechanisms of technological advantages and limitations, in addition to visual indicators to ensure proper utilization of the power scaling technologies. These fundamental principles will then be applied to advanced instrumentation in the periodontal patient with focus on furcation involvement and areas of challenging anatomical access. Maintenance of ultrasonic inserts and tips, optimum water management and patient considerations will be discussed.

At the completion of this course, participants will be able to understand:

  • The evidence-based decision making process for choosing periodontal instrumentation
  • The role of ultrasonic instrumentation in biofilm reduction and access to anatomical challenges
  • The differences and similarities in various ultrasonic technologies
  • The need for a variety of ultrasonic inserts/tips/ instruments for thorough periodontal debridement
  • The steps needed to ensure thorough removal of deposits and biofilm
  • The importance of keeping up with trends and research in implant maintenance
  • The proper maintenance and aerosol control protocols while using ultrasonic instrumentation effectively and efficiently

Marianne Dryer, RDH, M.Ed.

Marianne Dryer is one of the dental industry’s most outspoken educators on subjects of periodontal instrumentation, and she is a champion of early and advanced introduction to ultrasonic instrumentation into dental hygiene curricula. Her dynamic presentations, articulate academic instruction and insightful curriculum development are founded on more than 30 years of oral health experience. As such, Marianne is sought after nationally and internationally for her presentations on ultrasonic technique, risk assessment, infection prevention and radiology technique. Marianne has held faculty positions at dental hygiene programs in Texas and Massachusetts and is currently the Program Director at Cape Cod Community College in Barnstable, Massachusetts.

Jimmy Stegall is a seasoned dental lab operations and management executive with more than 40 years of teaching and clinical experience in the US and Canada. He is a published author and has assisted in research projects with dentists, universities, and manufacturers. After a successful 30+ year career helping to build and lead a large dental lab in South Carolina, Jimmy served as a division President of a large dental lab network, and is now a National Procedural Solutions Specialist for Dentsply Sirona. As a key opinion leader, teacher, and trainer, Jimmy has a demonstrated history of bringing results-oriented strategies and techniques to dental practices and labs throughout the US.

This presentation will focus on the rationale for selecting restorative materials to achieve optimal clinical results in both implant-supported and tooth-borne treatment plans.

  • The treatment challenges of various ceramic materials concerning strength, aesthetics and clinical applications
  • Standard of Care Concepts for single- and multiple unit restorations on tooth-borne and implant-supported restorations
  • The utilization of different types of zirconia, composite and hybrid polymers in combination cases
  • The preparation and cementation techniques to maximize a successful clinical outcome

Presenters

Willie Johnson, MDT, CDT, TE and Craig Yoder, CDT, TE

Mr. Johnson began his career in the United States Navy, where he served for 20 years. He was a Senior Technical Director and a Laboratory Manager for many dental laboratories throughout the Navy. Willie is one of the first technicians to obtain a dental technician certification specializing in implants. He is a member of the International Congress of Oral lmplantologists, the American Society of Master Dental Prosthologists, the Spear Education Study Clubs and the Northeastern Gnathological Society.

Mr. Yoder is a Certified Dental Technician and PTC Facilitator with over 30 years of practical, technical and management experience. Versed in modern dental materials science and applications, Craig’s broad scope of dental technology expertise is a result of his commitment to continuous personal improvement. He is a Certified Dawson Technician and is a member of the Central Pennsylvania Dawson Study Club.
